
Alternative Route to Licensure (ARL), MEd
The Utah State University Alternative Route to Licensure Program (ARL) helps qualified individuals earn a Utah Teaching License for secondary education and a Master of Education degree. Utah State University works in partnership with the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) to create ARL teachers. Interested individuals need to have a bachelor’s degree with a major in a subject area that is taught in Utah secondary schools. The USOE eligibility requirements must be met in order to be approved for hire (check out USOE requirements at www.schools.utah.gov/cert/apt).

Courses are delivered via state of the art video conferencing technology. Students meet at a designated time and location.

Letter of Eligibility from USOE
Apply to USOE for a letter of eligibility (March 1 through July 31) at: www.schools.utah.gov/cert/apt/ARL/altapplication.pdf
Letter of recommendation
Contact your principal to write you a letter of recommendation. The letter should include a statement identifying that you are hired as a teacher and what subjects you teach.
Professional Growth Plan from USOE
Individuals receive a Professional Growth Plan once they have been accepted to the USOE ARL Program and have been hired as a teacher in his/her approved area.
Graduate School admission
- Must be accepted to the USOE ARL Program and hired in approved area to apply to graduate school.
- Application must be completed (www.usu.edu/graduateschool/apply) and fee must be paid before any material is sent to the Graduate School.
- Take either Miller Analogy Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). (Must score above the 40th percentile)
- Send official transcripts to Graduate School. (Requires 3.0 for last 60 credit hours)
- Contact 3 people that will write you a letter of recommendation. Preferably instructors that can address you academic ability and potential for success in graduate school. Recommender names and e-mail addresses are required on the online application.
Individuals may take classes before being hired, but must speak with David Vernon first and sign the ARL Agreement of Understanding. However, only 12 graduate credits may count toward the master’s degree prior to acceptance to graduate school.

- Earn a master’s degree while earning a teaching license. Courses for your license (16-19 credits) can count toward your master’s degree (40 credits).
- A master’s degree translates into a substantially higher salary.

- Complete a license and a master’s degree within 2 years. Most student complete the program within 5 – 7 semesters. (Complete USOE’s Pedagogical Knowledge requirements within 3 semesters and finish the master’s degree 2-4 more semesters.)
