Ornamental Horticulture, AAS

This program provides practical training in greenhouse and nursery management, turf production, and landscape management. Coursework encompasses pest control, plant identification, construction of landscapes, small business management, and the operation and maintenance of equipment, including small engines. As an integral part of their training, students are required to complete an internship in the industry. This program is only available at the Salt Lake, Ogden and Orem Education Centers.

Availability

This program is available at the Ogden Education Center via the following Instruction Type(s):

Face to Face

Courses are taught in a traditional setting with the professor and students participating together in the same classroom. Students meet at a designated time and place.

Admissions

Students are admitted into this program through the university’s regular admission process.

 1.  New freshmen admitted to USU in good standing qualify for admission to this major.

 2. Transfer students from other institutions and from other USU majors need a 2.20 total GPA for admission to this major in good standing.

 

Requirements

In addition to learning about soil preparation, planting, growing, and harvesting crops, students learn how to identify and control insects, diseases and weeds. They study the use of growth regulators, proper fertilization, water application, crop rotation and other management practices to improve the production and quality of crops and to preserve
our environment.

Students entering the department are assigned an advisor who assists them in developing their course schedule, suggests opportunities for employment, and maintains an awareness of job opportunities after graduation. Faculty members in the department enjoy working with students and can make themselves available for student consultation.

The associate of applied science in ornamental horticulture discusses the demand for high-quality food; the use of ornamental plants to bring aesthetic qualities to urban living; the efforts to control air, soil, and water pollution; and the rehabilitation of land. Combined, these varied topics make this an exciting time to begin a career in plants, soil and climate.
