Elementary Education, MEd
The Master’s of Education Elementary Education program is designed for teachers who desire to improve their skills as educators. This includes school personnel as well as individuals who are involved in education-related activities in industry and/or other settings. Students find our master’s program practical and inspiring.
Students in the program work with advisors to design a program that includes several specialty areas, including Elementary Education, English as a Second Language, Reading, and Administration & Leadership. The program is delivered to USU regional campuses and education centers via interactive broadcast, allowing students across the state to participate in a real time classroom environment.

Courses are delivered via state of the art video conferencing technology. Students meet at a designated time and location.
Admissions
Students must be admitted to the School of Graduate Studies. Application materials can be found at www.usu.edu/graduateschool/apply. Requirements for admission include:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Score at or above 40th percentile on appropriate admissions test
- Three letters of recommendation
- Completed application and fee
- Official transcript of all college credit
- Standard elementary or early childhood teaching certificate and 1 year teaching experience
Admission deadlines are March 15 for summer semester, June 15 for fall semester, and October 15 for spring semester.
Requirements
- The program consists of 40 semester credits and does not require a thesis or a creative project. Each program has a culminating experience. See department for details.
- Each student will be assigned an advisor after admission to his/her respective program. Together a course of study will be outlined.
- Maximum credit allowed before admission is 12 credits.
- Transfer Credit: Students may transfer 6 semester credits, and up to 12 with prior approval.
- Students must complete a minimum of 10 on-campus credits (up to 5 credits may be taken through the Distance Education Satellite System from a tenured instructor).
- Workshop credits cannot exceed 8 credits.
Program Options:
- The Master’s of Education degree is not a research-oriented degree, and the emphasis is upon improving the educational philosophy and/or instructional skills of the candidate.
- Students may complete a 36-credit creative project (Plan B) or a 40-credit exit paper program (Plan C).
- Completion of the speciality areas leads to licensure or endorsement in the chosen area. For course requirements for the ESL, Reading, or Administration & Leadership areas, see brochures for those endorsements or certificates.

Utah State University offers Master degree (MEd) programs in Elementary Education through its distance education program. Courses are broadcast via satellite to USU Regional Campuses and Centers throughout the state. This program is designed for teachers who desire to engage in a graduate program that will help them improve their competencies. The program includes completion of 40 credits of approved graduate courses, and completion of an Exit Paper and an oral review. Secondary candidates should complete a 3 semester credit Culminating Seminar at or near the end of the program, in which students integrate their experiences in the program.
Candidates are able to design a program that includes several specialties that will improve their competencies as educators. Specialties for off campus students include Elementary Education, Gifted and Talented Education (not offered at every site), Reading, Supervision, and Middle-Level Education.

In addition, students must complete 4 credits of supporting coursework. Work with an advisor to select appropriate courses.
